Chapter Fourteen

Avery was in bed, and Cass waited anxiously for Mike to leave so she could call the babysitter. It wasn’t that she wanted to keep even more secrets from him. It seemed that he was suspicious of Madina since the incident at the airport, and maybe Daphne too. Both of them had been a guest in her house, and she could meet them whenever she pleased, of course…She wanted to avoid him asking too many questions that would unavoidably lead to lies.

No matter what Rafi said, she couldn’t tell him the whole truth. No human would understand that their lover could turn into an animal, a dangerous one at that, in a heartbeat.

As she stood in front of the mirror in the master bedroom, Cass had to laugh at her silly musings. If she’d turn into a puppy, that wouldn’t make the conversation any easier. She went to Avery’s room, closing the door softly after she’d assured herself that Avery was sleeping. At the sound behind her, Cass jumped and spun around.

“Why are you sneaking up on me like that? I thought you were late already.”

“Didn’t I tell you? I switch to day shifts today. I thought I could cook us something, and a bought a bottle of wine on the way home.”

Cass smiled nervously, unsure what to say. “This is great.”

“Yes it is. Erik kept all of us out of trouble. Come to think of it, we should buy him a bottle of wine too.”

“We paid him. Look, Madina will pay us back as soon as she can. I was going to talk to her tonight…” At least she had something to fit her story. Mike’s face fell at her suggestion.

“I didn’t know you were going out tonight…”

“I won’t stay long, just give her the account number…”

“You can’t do that over the phone?”

“Come on. I’ll be back the moment dinner is ready. Believe me, I’ve had a long day. I’m so hungry I’ll be able to smell something delicious from far away.”

That actually was the truth.

Mike was placated for a moment, though Cass was afraid that his mind hadn’t rested since Daphne called him to say Cass and Madina were in need of an attorney.

“Okay, I’ll get started. Don’t take too long.” They kissed, and for a moment Cass was tempted to forget about the cause for one night and spend time with her husband. She didn’t even have that much to report.

Skylar and Madina had been working at a school with younger kids, Daphne was shadowing Eva Grant, and Rafi was as usual involved in a bit of everything.

Since returning from the impromptu trip, Cass hadn’t done more than tirelessly trying to convince students that feminism didn’t mean the end of family and civilization as they knew it. She was making progress. Students who had always understood the dynamics, were empowered and found more allies. That in itself was encouraging, though it wasn’t encouraging breaking news within their circle. She realized there was no way she’d make it to the bar and back in the time promised, at least not in human form.
